The Process
After the review and refinement by the HR Committee, the club will post the position of Head Professional at Mad River on the Canadian PGA website in the first week of September. Because Brian’s retirement plans are public, we are able to be about two months ahead of the traditional personnel movement in the private club industry and therefore provide ourselves with the largest available pool of candidates.
A Search Committee has been formed comprised of both management, board members and members at large. This small committee will help us review candidates across a broad array of both capabilities and competencies, and test fit with the Mad River values and culture. I am happy to share that Susan Quigley and Paul Wildridge will join Doug Painter, and Bob Cook from our Board of Directors to serve alongside of Gary on this search.
Gary is confident that we will receive a significant number of high quality internal and external applicants. After a preliminary vetting of the applications by Gary and his management team, resumes will be forwarded to the Search Committee for review and evaluation. Once a short list has been established, interviews will take place in October with any internal candidates automatically qualified for an interview.
After interviews (multiple, if necessary) have been completed, the Search Committee will rank the candidates, conduct background checks, and extend an offer to the preferred candidate sometime in November. An announcement to the membership will follow.

The Position
The position of Head Professional has evolved over the years, At Mad River, the Head Professional has approximately 20 direct and indirect reports, all of whom are member facing on a daily basis. The Head Professional is responsible for their recruitment, training, and development. This is a significant people leadership and development role, responsible for 1/3 of all of our employees.
In addition, the Head Professional is responsible for organizing club golf events, managing the tee sheet, and procuring, safeguarding, displaying, and selling club merchandise.
A key member of the Mad River management team and the face of the Club, the Head Professional is responsible for a revenue budget of about $600,000 and an expense budget of about $500,000 as well as inventory management.
It is not too much to say that the Head Professional’s management skills will need to be as strong as his or her golf skills.
