But here's the part people get wrong: the Play Box isn't empty. Your mind still wants a job — so give it one that isn't technical. That's what Balance, Tempo and Tension are for. Pick one and let it be your only focus. Balance: feel grounded and athletic, settled enough to hold your finish. Tempo: one smooth, even rhythm, the same swing to swing. Tension, my favourite for players who freeze over the ball: do a quick body scan, notice where you're tight — usually the hands, the shoulders, or the jaw — and simply release it before you swing. One non-technical feel keeps the analytical mind occupied so the swing you already own can actually show up.

So the whole practice comes down to this. One focus, maximum, over the ball. Commit to the shot before you go — if you're not sure, stay in the Think Box and decide. And when you hit a loose one, talk to yourself the way you'd talk to a playing partner you actually like, because the next shot is listening. Leave the swing thoughts on the range where they belong, walk into the Play Box with a single feel, and give yourself permission to be a player.
