Mid-season Financial Overview

With the completion of our July financials, we’ve arrived at the mid-point of summer. With that in mind, I thought it appropriate for a brief update on our operating results and the project financials.

Despite the slow start to the season, our operating revenues are up 1.3% to budget. The higher than budgeted revenues are primarily due to greater than expected dues, guest and cart revenues. Golf shop and food and beverage sales are both running slightly behind budget through July, however both significantly exceeded July budgets and are tracking ahead of budget in August.

Our operating expenses are underspent against budget by 2.7%. The slow start delayed the timing of our typical opening “ramp up” expenses. We will still incur most of these expenses, it’s just that our slow start pushed our timing back, so these expenses are occurring later than budgeted. Our cost of goods sold are also lower than budgeted, due to the lower than projected sales.

As a result, I expect our expenses to balance out over the next two months. Given we were still under construction in May and June, I’m delighted with our current situation. Notwithstanding anything drastic occurring over the next couple months, it’s very possible we’ll deliver an operating surplus this year.

A lot has happened at the club over the past week. Last Tuesday, the ladies played their Shotgun Angel Ball game. In this format, the team takes 2 net best ball scores. The Angel ball rotates through the group and your score playing the Angel ball can count as the 2 net scores if you choose but cannot be used in combination with one of your teammates scores. Determining the winning team is a manual calculation (golf genius can’t manage this one!) and a shout out and thank you to Hannah who tucked herself away in a quiet room and used her mathematical skills to let us know which teams performed the best.

Congrats to all the winning teams.
1st Liz Fitzhenry, Deborah Ise and Liz Quanbury
2nd Anne Stevenson, Patti Teeter, Cathy Hobart and Sharon Delorenzi
3rd Celeste Dunford, Lesley Brightling and Sheila Kaarlela

Three days later, our Ladies’ 2-Day Club Championship was about to begin but not before the Horserace/Shootout event that kicks off the championship! Played late Thursday afternoon, all nine teams were ready for the challenge, including one team that had already picked out their team uniform!
The event is played as an alternate shot format. The first hole saw no elimination, so there was no pressure! In fact, a new record was set, with all nine teams completing the first hole in just 31 minutes! To keep things light and fun, music was playing, and the coolers were full. Two teams were eliminated on every hole after that, except the 8th, leaving our finalists to battle it out on the 9th.

The 7th hole featured an exciting playoff to determine which teams would carry on. Myles selected the location which was an uphill chip to the green. Everyone watched a clinic put on by Kristy, Carla and Hilarie. All three chipped up and past the pin, using the slope on the other side to roll their balls back toward the hole. I thought I was watching an LPGA event as all three effortlessly settled within four feet of the pin!

Our finalists, Charlene Wildridge and Susan Quigley, faced Carla Robbins and Sharon Delorenzi on the 9th hole. With a stroke in hand, Carla and Sharon held on to win the Horserace/Shootout having fended off 8 teams!

And we can’t forget two of the best lines of the afternoon, both courtesy of Hilarie:
“Oh no, I don’t know if we’ll find that ball.”
“Don’t worry,” says Hilarie. “We have 18 ladies here today who can look!”
And then came another line.
“Can we have a ruling here?”
“Sorry,” says Carl, “there is no rules official here today.”
Hilarie replies, “Will a bridge director do?” 😄
What a great way to kick off the Ladies’ Club Championship!

Thank you to all the ladies for attending and making the afternoon such a fun and memorable event.

Over the weekend, Dean Henry and David Henry both punched their tickets to the annual Dinner of Champions in October.  Dean as our 2026 Club Champion and David as our net Club Champion.  Congratulations on your very successful weekends guys!  But far more than that, congratulations to the 22 women, 70 men and 5 junior members who came out to test their game over 36 holes (18 for the juniors) at our beloved course in what I would argue are the best conditions of the year.  Congratulations to Ben Hutchison who prevailed in the junior competition!  Shout out to Chad, Rob and their team for your hard work in preparing the course for the weekend.  Your dedication to Mad River shone through as bright as ever over the weekend!  And of course, huge thank yous to Michelle, Chef and the entire F&B team for looking after us so well and to Carl, Shawn and the entire ProShop / backshop team for ensuring that the event ran smoothly from start to finish.  Club Championship weekend is my favourite, by far, of the golf season.  I’d love to see even more members tee it up in 2027!

You Know It’s August at Mad River When…

Your morning round starts with a coffee and that’s just the beginning.

You stop at Cupp’s Corner for “just a quick snack” and leave with a chicken salad sandwich, a bag of kettle chips and something cold for the back nine.

The patio is full, the Sunroom has its regulars, and there always seems to be a group that came in for one drink and is still there a couple of hours later.

The Club Champions have been crowned, aeration has arrived (a sure sign of August for any golfer), and everyone seems to have developed their own Mad River routine. There are the early-morning coffee regulars, the golfers who know exactly what they’re grabbing at the turn, the post-round pint crowd, and those who already have their favourite table picked out before they walk through the door.
