THE MAD POST

With the cart path resurfacing continuing this week, I wanted to remind everyone to keep posting their scores hole-by-hole, even with the temporary hole closures. As I mentioned in the last Mad Post, this is one of the main reasons Golf Canada, and the World Handicap System is requiring players to post hole-by-hole scores. When you post the 9-hole score, or incomplete round, the handicap system will automatically convert the score into an 18-hole differential. The closures will not last long as the cart path work is expected to be completed by the end of the week, or early next.

The official handicap season in Ontario runs from April 15th through October 31st, so please continue posting your scores as we get closer to the end of the season.

My Last Post in The Post

So, this is it, my two years did fly
And after 52 Posts I’ll say goodbye
But before I go, I’d like to toast
A few of the folks who helped me the most

There’s Gary Ward whom you may know
He steered us through the renovation show
His weekly Posts and his video clips
Showed the dirt a moving and fairway rips
Big news on 12 and 6 and seventeen
With a hole redesign and 2 new greens
The bunkers with their complete redo
And the clubhouse with inside like new
Best of all he saw the need
To keep us ladies up to speed

Well, things are well and truly marching towards the end of the season.  The Fall Classic was held on October 7th with some undoubtedly devious pins which were fun to sort out.  Post round, we enjoyed watching the shootout for the closest to the pin winners from the MAD League season and some fellowship while we enjoyed a fantastic fall spread produced by Chef and the entire F&B team.  And, on October 15th we feted our event winners at our annual Dinner of Champions.  Congratulations to all!

An Evening of Celebration, Friendship & Achievement

What a wonderful evening of celebration as the Champions of Mad River gathered for the annual Dinner of Champions, honouring the outstanding achievements of our 2026 golf season!

It was a lovely occasion, highlighted by lively and engaging speeches from our Ladies’ and Men’s Captains, PA Irwin-Allen and Dean Elliott. We also enjoyed thoughtful remarks from Vice-Captain Brad Robbins, incoming Ladies’ Captain Judy Adams, and Club President David Woollcombe.  Their words added warmth, humour and a wonderful sense of Club pride to an already memorable evening.

From closely contested matches to memorable victories, each of our champions has contributed to another terrific season of golf. Their dedication, enthusiasm and love of the game are certainly worthy of recognition.

Notes from the Chef Stephen Sagar

From the Grill

Last year I got swept up in Blue Jay fever with the historic run to the World Series. This year, I have been able to watch the season slow down with the drastic weather changes, colour alterations and the variety of aromas exiting the kitchen. Everyday I shake my head thinking of the speed of each golf season and how abruptly we see less faces.

But don't put the clubs away just yet; we still have a few weeks of golf and dining left!

I may be a bit biased but I believe there is no better way to finish a cool autumn round than by coming into the Clubhouse for a hot bowl of homemade soup and a delicious sandwich.

There is something particularly satisfying about warming up after being out on the course when the temperature starts to dip. A good soup, a hearty sandwich and a little time to relax can be the perfect ending to a fall day at Mad River.

And while we are talking about comfort food, I thought I would share a fun little appetizer that made an appearance in my kitchen a few weeks ago: Reuben in a Bite.

I love taking a familiar dish and shrinking it down into something you can enjoy in one or two bites: an Amuse Bouche.

For those who have tried our Mad Mile High Reuben, this is a sandwich that has all the right components: salty corned beef, tangy sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and that wonderful creamy Russian dressing. Put them together and you get a great combination of salty, sour, creamy and savoury.

This version has another advantage: it is gluten-free, provided you use gluten-free corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and dressing. Simply remove the rye and say “Good-bye, Reuben Tuesday.”
